Afro-Tech Girls Design Thinking Curriculum

Afro-Tech Girls is a non-profit organisation in Nigeria with the mission to empower young women to enter the STEM, or Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, fields. These are highly sought after careers, but they are still male dominated roles. Afro-Tech Girls aims to empower Nigerian girls to see that these stigmas should be disregarded should they want to study these fields.

One way in which they help to empower these young women is through a two week Bootcamp on a specific STEM topic each year. In 2021 they changed their vision for these Bootcamps slightly and instead of focusing on a specific topic like solar power, they aimed to equip the girls with Design Thinking Skills.

They approached our team to create custom designed content that fitted with their brand to be delivered at this Bootcamp. We were honoured to have developed an interactive and engaging curriculum along with all Slide resources and activity packs that the mentors would need in the sessions with the girls. Just before the Bootcamp was delivered we met with the mentors who would be working with the girls to work with them on how best to deliver the sessions to the girls.

Emerging Trends for African Education Webinar Series

Google for Education released their "Future of the Classroom" report detailing 8 emerging trends in Education. These trends Google predicts will help learners to prepare for the careers and challenges they are most likely to face in the future, especially considering how quickly the world is changing. Equipping our learners with skills is more important now than ever before, as most of our learners are going into jobs that do not exist yet.

Africa has the power to be a leading continent in the world, but sadly our lack of resources and knowledge hinder the continent. These new and exciting trends are not easily available to teachers across the continent, until now. The Google Digital Skills Africa team launched a project to help get the information on these trends to Africa. The project took the form of 10 Webinar sessions which were live streamed onto their YouTube channel, resources and tips to how the Google tools could be used to help with the teaching of these skills and a teacher cohort in South African and Nigeria to foster collaboration between teacher champions in each country.

Our role in this project the design and creation of all the session content, including the Slide presentations that were used, the demo activities and the resources packs sent out after each session. We also worked closely with teachers in South Africa and Nigeria to enable them to present the content.

This content was all custom designed to fit with the Google branding guidelines, but including an African feel. Below are videos and resource packs to some of the sessions I designed.
